Another obvious attraction of these materials is that in many cases they display dual functionality. Not only can the output response (for example actuation) be used as an end all to itself, but it, or its manifestation, can also be used as an input stimulus generating an output, which signals the occurrence of an event (sensing) as in piezoelectric based devices:

Where input of an electric field can generate a corresponding strain, and vice versa an input of strain results in the output of a voltage.
