A second is synthesizing composite materials from known constituents where active elements are either embedded or attached to conventional materials:

A large variety of other configurations are possible, where, based on the characteristics of the active and passive constituents, the composite can display diverse functionality derived from the known spectrum of physiochemical properties of substances.  Examples abound from piezoelectric to magnetoresistive, to electrically conductive composites.   In the thermal delay composite PTC thermistor, unlike barium titanate based devices, no ferroelectric phase transition needs to occur.  A conductive filler companion loaded into a suitable thermoset or thermoplastic matrix can show huge changes in the electrical resistance of the system, often by several orders of magnitude, by disrupting or reforming percolation pathways at appropriate temperatures .
